New Zealand - North Island |
Auckland
|
Auckland: This is the gateway to the North Island and has one of the prettiest harbours next to Sydney (not that I'm biased of course!). It is known as the city of sails and is reputed to have more yachts per capita than any other city in the world. I recommend a couple of nights in Auckland to get the feel for this modern city and enjoy some fantastic food. I love eating in New Zealand. The country is very fortunate to farm most of its own produce from the sea and land. Parnell is one suburb that is worth a visit for a meal. Take a wander down the main street and decide what takes your fancy: Italian, Asian, Indian, French, seafood... you will be spoilt for choice. Accommodation3 Star: New President Hotel - Located in the heart of the city, 100 metres to Queen Street, Sky City Tower and Casino. The New President offers Studio, 1 and 2 Bedroom Apartments. 4 Star: CityLife Auckland - a Heritage Hotel - Exceptionally priced all suite accommodation, excellent location within walking distance of the waterfront. 5 Star: Hilton Auckland - Magnificent location on Prince's Wharf, right on Auckland's waterfront overlooking the harbour and 100 metres north from the CBD, ferry terminal and central to the America's Cup Marina. 5 Star Apartment Style: The Ascott Metropolis Auckland - Excellent location with some rooms offering views of Waitemata Harbour. The Ascott Metropolis offers One and Two Bedroom Suites all fully self-contained. |
Auckland TouringGreat Sights offer a half day tour that takes in the 'Must See Three' main attractions of Auckland. This is also a great way to get your orientation before going off and exploring on your own. Great Sights also offer some full day tours to the beautiful Bay of Islands in the north or to the thermal city of Rotorua in the south. If time doesn't permit a couple of days visit to either of these places then these day trips will at least give you a look albeit brief. Bay of Island Tour, Rotorua and Waitomo Tour. |

Auckland Attractions If you prefer to explore on your own then the following places are
a must see/do: Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Centre and Underwater World - a fascinating re-creation of New Zealand's southern neighbour. Learn about life and weather patterns at Antarcitca with displays including a reproduction of the famous explorers hut - Robert Scott. Connected with the centre is Underwater World. Walk through and see sharks, local fish and a touch pool for the kids. Auckland Zoo - if you want to see the countries national symbol, the flightless 'Kiwi' bird, here is where you'll find it. The Observation Deck at the Tower Shopping Centre - sensational 360° views of the city and surrounding harbour. Mount Eden - the highest point above sea level in Auckland. Home to a volcanic crater and views stretching out over the Tasman and Pacific Oceans. Sky City Casino - Whether you want to have a flutter on the tables or just enjoy one of the most spectacular views of Auckland from the Observation Deck, a visit is definitely worthwhile. |

Bay of Islands
|
The Bay of Islands approx. 3hrs drive to the north of Auckland is a favourite holiday destination with locals and visiting yachts sailing around the world. This picturesque region comprises 144 Islands and secluded bays, little wonder why it is a haven for overseas 'boaties' and sports fisherman. Whilst the focus is heavily on marine activities, the Bay of Islands is steeped in Maori history, home to the famous Treaty House on the Waitangi National Reserve. The main hub in the Bay of Islands is Paihia. From here visitors can join sightseeing tours and the hotels and restaurants are all situated here. Remember if you don't have enough time to spend a couple of days then Great Sights offer a fantastic day tour: Discover the Bay. |
Paihia Accommodation3 Star: Marlin Court - A short walk to the waterfront and town centre. Good value for money motel style accommodation. 4 Star: Flag Beachcomber Resort - Located on 2 acres of lush gardens with some rooms overlooking the sea. 5 Star: Paihia Beach Resort & Spa - the Paihia Beach Resort & Spa offers panoramic views from every suite, studio and private patio. |
Bay of Islands AttractionsWaitangi Reserve and Treaty House - The very heart of New Zealand history. Visit the Treaty House, the famous Maori War Canoe and see the Sound/Light display in the Meeting House. Hole in the Rock/Cape Brett - this cruise takes you to the natural wonder the 'hole in the rock' where your captain navigates the boat right through it with only inches to spare. Also Cape Brett Lighthouse. The 'Cream Trip' is a more leisurely cruise that visits the inner islands delivering mail and stores providing a link between the mainland and the island residents. Russell - this historic town was the first capital of New Zealand and is full of charm with cafes, museums and craft shops lining the waterfront. Travel by ferry from Paihia. Cape Reinga - famous for its lighthouse and the point where the blue Pacific Ocean meets the deep green of the Tasman Sea. On the way stop at mighty Ninety Mile Beach for some stunning views. |

Rotorua
|
The first thing you'll notice about Rotorua is the air. The pungent smell of sulphur signals your arrival at this thermal city of geysers and bubbling mud. Fortunately, you become accustomed to the aroma fairly quickly and the natural wonders of this city are more than enough distraction. I recommend at least 2 full days, there is quite alot to see and do and at the end of it treat yourself to a soak in a hot thermal pool. Situated approx. 2 1/2 hr easy drive from Auckland, a stop at the Glow Worm Caves at Waitomo can be slotted into the itinerary if you have enough time and an interest in fluorescent worms. Rotorua is the home of the Maori Hangi, a traditional feast. Many hotels have nightly dinner shows and whilst the entertainment is excellent, traditional Maori food is an acquired taste. If you haven't got the time to spend a couple of days exploring Rotorua then Great Sights have an excellent day tour departing and returning to Auckland that covers the major places of interest: Waitomo and Rotorua Experience. |
Rotorua Accommodation3.5 Star: Lake Plaza Rotorua Hotel - Located on the shores of Lake Rotorua, only two blocks from the shops and central business district. 4 Star: Princes Gate Hotel - this is a charming boutique style hotel located right in the heart of Rotorua. Luxury Retreat: Solitaire Lodge - The place to stay preferably in the Tarawera Suite! Perched on the shores of Lake Tarawera with unobstructed views of green shoreline and deep blue waters. Exclusive and luxurious. |
|
Rotorua AttractionsWhakawerawera Thermal Reserve - See boiling mud pools and shooting geysers. There are demonstrations of carving and weaving by Maori people. This is what Rotorua is most famous for and a great combination is with the Mt. Tarawera 4WD/Helicopter Tour. Agrodome - this is a 50min sheep show! I'm sure I'm not the only one to have doubts about the interest I would find in a performance dedicated to this humble animal and I'm sure I'm not the only one to be thoroughly surprised at how entertaining and informative this is. Well worth a visit. Mt. Tarawera - Take a 4WD to the top and walk down the rim of the crater. This is a very unusual experience and the landscape is almost lunar. The best way to get back down is by helicopter with some of the most amazing views before landing at Whakawerawera Thermal Reserve. I recommend this as one of the best experiences in Rotorua - Mt. Tarawera 4WD tours in conjunction with New Zealand Helicopters run this tour. |

Lake Taupo |
If you are interested in fishing this is the place to visit. I used this as a stopover on my way from Rotorua to Wellington. Whilst fishing is not my preferred leisure activity I did enjoy a couple of hours standing on the back of a boat whilst I held my rod and watched my companion reel in 3 trout! To the dismay of our guide we dutifully kissed all 3 before setting them free. This was a great experience but quite a costly one. Be prepared to pay well to be taken to the prime spots. Lake Taupo is a very pretty spot and has some lovely walks, the area has a real alpine feel. Accommodation |
Wellington |

The city has a pretty harbour and an overnight will give time to explore before travelling to Picton on the South Island. Learn about Maori culture, experience virtual reality thrills, a changing outdoor exhibition and a hands on Discovery Centre. Wellington
