Day 1 - Adelaide to Wilpena Pound
We take a short break in the Clare Valley before continuing on to the southern reaches of the Flinders Ranges through small country towns including Melrose, Quorn and Hawker. We visit Yourmbulla caves to view some Aboriginal Rock art then head to Wilpena Pound where the challenging climb of Mt Ohlssen-Bagge is rewarded with magnificent views over the ranges, the desert and Lake Torrens. Overnight at Wilpena campground. (LD)
Day 2 - Wilpena Pound to Arkaroola
We enjoy the striking scenery of the Flinders Ranges on the way to Arkaroola. We spend the afternoon hiking and exploring the 4WD tracks criss-crossing this remote outback area before settling down for our overnight camp. (BLD)
Day 3 - Oodnadatta Track to William Creek
We travel through the Gammon Ranges to Maree and the beginning of the Oodnadatta Track, viewing Lake Eyre South along the way. We continue onto the world famous William Creek, population 5 (if everyone is there!), where we camp overnight. (BLD)
Day 4 - William Creek to Coober Pedy
We drive through the desert, stopping at the famous Dingo fence, to the opal mining town of Coober Pedy. This isolated town where most of the inhabitants live underground has been the setting for many movies, including 'Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome'. We take you on a mine tour with an opal cutting demonstration, followed by the opportunity to go 'noodling' (local language for opal fossicking). We stay overnight in an underground bunkhouse. NB: For those upgrading to hotel accommodation in Coober Pedy, dinner and breakfast is at own expense). (BLD)
Day 5 - Coober Pedy to Uluru
We head for the Northern Territory via Mulga Park, near the South Australia/ Northern Territory border, following the back roads to Mt Connor. This rugged area is spectacular country that most travellers never get the chance to see. We arrive at Uluru (Ayers Rock) in time for the spectacular sunset. (BLD)
Day 6 - Uluru to Kata Tjuta & Kings Canyon
Yet another early start for one of the highlights of the tour - the Uluru sunrise! Enjoy a base walk exploring the mysterious formations and Aboriginal art sites while watching the changing light on the desert or you can choose to climb the rock. This spectacular experience is followed by a guided interpretive walk at Mala. We then visit Kata Tjuta (Olgas) and take a walk through Walpa Gorge. After lunch, we head to Kings Canyon for our overnight camp and some great camp oven cooking. (BLD)
Day 7 - Mereenie Loop to Alice Springs
Explore Kings Canyon viewing the 'Amphitheatre', 'Lost City', the picturesque 'Garden of Eden' and the breathtaking North and South Walls, then take a refreshing dip in the waterhole (summer only). After lunch we hit the 4WD Mereenie Loop travelling through the craggy peaks of the Western MacDonnell Ranges on our way to Alice Springs. (BL)
